Dynamics of structures is an important area of study in civil and mechanical engineering. In this area, one of the major problems is cracks initiated by different means. Cracks are among the most important cause of failure. Extensive investigations on the vibration of cracked beams are reported in the literature. Based on these work cracks can be identified in advance and appropriate measures can be taken to prevent more
damage due to high vibration level. In this paper a new method for vibration analysis of cracked beams is proposed. Based on the calculus of variations principles, the governing equations of the system, which is in form of a differential equation subjected to boundary conditions, is transformed to an optimization problem. The standard optimization techniques are then used to carry out the process. In this method vibration of beams with general section properties is analyzed in a simple and efficient way. Through analysis of numerical examples and comparison of the results with other methods the accuracy, efficiency and robustness of the method is verified.
