From the beginning researchers focused almost exclusively on the translation of scientific and technical documents, where the difficulties of cultural differences and variable contexts are less acute than in the more culture –bound translation of literature, legal texts and many areas of sociology. In science and technology the demand for translation has almost always exceeded the capacity of the translation profession and these demands are growing rapidly. In addition, the coming of the Internet has created a demand for immediate online translation which human translators can not possibly meet, so use of machine translation tools accelerated. The present paper embraces the conventional application of MT tools and also covers three major criteria (type of user, type of translation, document characteristics) in order to successfully select the proper MT tool or determine if any MT tool will be of value. The final section compares the types of translations that can be most appropriately by human and by machine translation respectively.
